Rationalism v.s. Faith
In Life of Pi, one of the themes involved rationalism against faith. Life of Pi contained 2 points of views on the same event. One to appeal towards people who would choose to believe the irrational story, and one to appeal towards readers that are too realistic to believe in the first one. I feel that there's no particular need to make a more realistic version of the event, because no matter how irrational a story is, there will always be a chance that it might actually happen.
Rationalism means the reader will only believe in factual stories. Faith means that the reader will be willing to believe that the irrational is rational. In the end, Life of Pi is a fiction. No matter what story the reader chooses to believe, they will always end up having to put their faith into a specific plot anyways, rational or not, because the entire plot is fiction. Even the more realistic point of view will require readers to believe in the story, in order to make the plot seem rational, because technically, it's not. Faith is always required with fiction while rationalism is not.
