Does Homework Have a More Negative Effect on Students than Positive?
In my research paper I will be talking about if homework has either a more negative effect or more positive effect on students academic achievement & life at home & at school. I will explain why in my opinion, homework is more negative for students than positive.
The first article(Relationships of Homework Motivation and Preferences to Homework Achievement and Attitudes in Turkish Students) talked about how homework affects a students relation with the homework, because either the homework motivates the student into doing the homework or discouraging them and by doing so creates a negative attitude for homework. The article also talks about how homework widens the gap between the "good" students & the "bad" students, & that gender & social class affects a students homework motivation.
The second article(Homework: What's the Point?) breaks up homework into a easy to look at positives & negatives section, & the article creates a pro's & con's list. According to the study homework is deficient & negatively influencing students. Some of the big points in the con's list is homework creates stress between parents/guardians, limits students’ time for family, community, and extracurricular activities, and encourages students to cheat.
The third article(Discrepancies Between Students' and Teachers' Perceptions of Homework) explains how sometimes there are a miscommunication between students and educators. In this study it shows how educators think that homework is doing good for students & helps them build responsibility & self-regulation even though, in the study it showed that students rated there own homework habits drastically lower than the teachers rated them.
The fourth article(Homework Completion: The Role of Self-efficacy, Delay of Gratification, and Self-Regulatory Process) shows how homework doesn't allow students to self-regulate themselves & doesn't allow them to motivate themselves but instead let educators put a specific time & date on everything. The article also talks about how homework interupts gratification by making the student think he/she is not up to the standards"
The last article(Homework Practices: Myths and Realities.) explores different myths and realities of homework. It shows that it's not always true what the general population believes like how most educators believe that homework serves one primary purpose, to improve academic achievement.
In Conclusion, I think that homework does have a more negative effect on students than positive. A solution for this is to instead of giving homework just focus on work that will create an equal playing field for all students such as, giving group assignments that will develop teamwork, and assigned responsibility but not by teachers but by other students or by using newly developed technologies such as, Ipad's, Clickers, & Computers.
