Rationalism and Faith were two themes that were explored in "Life of Pi". These two opose each other greatly. Even though they do, Yann Martel weaved these two together and made it into a book where both are viewed and explored.
Being rational is seeing everything in a comprehendable manner and leaning back in math, numbers or what's logical for everything.
Having faith, on the other hand, is believing in the unseen or the unthinkable and what couldn't be understood. Thinking that something, somewhere has made it that way,effortlessly without calculating how it would turned out that way.
Knowing that these two are different from the other and having them together in a book is confusing. Confusing in the sense that you may deny the other based on what kind of person you are. if you're naturally rational you'll automatically shut the door on the possibility of having faith and vice versa.
Yann Martel includes these in the book. Open-ended possibilities in events that he didn't specify and you,as a reader decide how to view it. but that's what makes the book a good read. Being able to take part in the book as a reader.
